When I was staying in Hanam, I sometimes took a taxi home if I missed the last bus. I lived near city hall (시청, shicheong), so I’d just tell the driver to drop me at city hall and walk the half block home. One night I got my words mixed up and told him to drop me at the 시장 shijang (market), which sounds similar. When he stopped the taxi at the closed farmers market, I paid, and walked the fifteen minutes through the deserted streets in heels back to where I should’ve been dropped off. I never made that mistake again.
